Murphy earns second buckle at Heartland ProRodeo Championships

Bandy Murphy is setting the standard in bull riding with just two of nine performances completed at the Heartland ProRodeo Championships in Waco, Texas.

Murphy, who lives at Morgan Mill, Texas had the high point rides at each performance and has already earned two trophy belt buckles and has the potential to earn four more. He is the high money winner here so far having collected checks totaling $5,028. At the first performance he missed the arena record by one point with a 90-point ride on David Bailey Rodeo’s bull named Billionaire. He came back in front of a standing room only crowd and scored 84 points on Smoke owned by Classic Pro Rodeo.

Murphy will return on Thursday, Oct. 15 for the progressive round.

Murphy scores 90-points on David Bailey Rodeo's Billionaire

Bandy Murphy became the first guy in the PRCA to score 90 points aboard David Bailey Rodeo's Billionaire during the 2009 Heartland ProRodeo Championship in Waco, Texas. Murphy, of Morgan Mill, Texas, picked up the win on opening night and collected a check worth $2,514.

“That is a good bull and luckily I was able to get by him to the tune of a good score,” said Murphy of the bull that has a 91.67 buckoff percentage for 2009. “Hopefully I will be able to carry this momentum into Saturday's performance.”

The only other bull rider to record a 90-plus point ride on Billionaire is Justin McBride who did so during the PBR stop in Nashville, Tenn., in 2008. Earlier this year, 2008 PRCA Bull Riding World Champion J.W. Harris scored 86 points on the bull in Fort Worth, Texas.

Murphy was one of just three bull riders to get a score on the opening day of the Heartland Championships. Tate Stratton of Stanley, N.M., was second with an 87, while Blake Rowan of Muskogee, Okla., was third with an 81. Murphy will return on Saturday, Oct. 10 for the second performance of the Heartland ProRodeo Championships at the Heart O'Texas Fair and Rodeo, hoping to equal his score from the first night.

One-on-One with Bandy Murphy

Since winning the 2009 Toughest Cowboy title Bandy has been going to some PRCA rodeos and working construction around his home in Morgan Mill, Texas. He took some time out of his schedule for a quick Q&A session about the Toughest Cowboy Series.

TC:     After winning the 2007 title and missing the championship in 2008, how important was it for you to win in 2009?

Bandy: Winning the 2009 title was just as important to me as winning it in 2007. It lifted a weight off my shoulder to win it again and prove to everyone that it wasn’t a fluke in 2007. I wish the format in 2008 hadn’t cost me a chance at the title but the past is the past and I am happy to have won this prestigious title again.

TC:     Was there a point in the season where you thought you might not have a shot at the title?
